This wooded structure on the wall top is a hourd, and is used to stop ladders reaching the walls. The defenders can also remove the planks in the floor, and drop things on anyone attacking the wall base.
This is a ruined section of the inner wall, in the far corner of the courtyard.

These pretend soldiers are standing in the hourd, demonstrating how it would be used. These are specially shaped trebuchet shot found at Caerphilly. They weigh in at 15 kilograms!

The Keep stands tall and imposing in the concentric defence system. This is a tall window through which can be seen the courtyard. This is a gateway leading to the rear defensive wall of Caerphilly.

This is a perrier, which developed from the man-powered trebuchet, and is one of four replica siege engines at Caerphilly. This is a picture of the twisted ropes, which power the mangonel. This is the Mangonel, another of Caerphilly's replica siege engines.
